  • How to Use Wax Melts: A Beginner's Guide

    Jun 16, 2026

If you've just discovered wax melts - or you've been gifted some and aren't quite sure what to do with them - you're in the right place.

Wax melts are one of the simplest ways to fragrance your home. No wick trimming, no worrying about a candle burning unevenly, no commitment to one scent for weeks. Just beautiful fragrance on your terms.

Here's everything you need to know.

    What You'll Need

To use wax melts, you need two things:

    1. The wax melt itself - this is the scented wax, usually sold as snap bars, pods, or shapes. Our snap bars can be broken into pieces so you control exactly how much you use.

    2. A burner - this is what heats the wax and releases the fragrance. There are two types:

    • Tealight burner (recommended) - a ceramic or glass dish on a stand, with space underneath for a small tealight candle. The flame warms the dish, which melts the wax above it. This is what we always recommend for the best scent throw - the heat level from a tealight is ideal for releasing fragrance properly.
    • Electric warmer - plugs into the wall and uses a low-heat bulb or element instead of a flame. Convenient and flameless, but heat output varies a lot between models. If you use an electric burner, make sure it's at least 40 watts - anything lower and the wax may not get hot enough to release the fragrance fully, which is the most common reason people find their wax melts aren't throwing scent.

Our honest recommendation: a tealight burner gives you the best results every time. If you do prefer electric, just check the wattage before you buy.

Step by Step: How to Use a Wax Melt

Step 1: Break off a piece

Our snap bars are scored into sections for a reason. You don't need to use the whole bar at once - start with one or two sections. For a small room, one section is plenty. For a larger open-plan space, try two.

If you're using one of our 25g pods from a Discovery Box, you can snap that in half too - each half gives you around 12 hours of fragrance.

Step 2: Place it in your burner dish

Pop your piece of wax melt into the dish at the top of your burner. No water needed - just the wax directly in the dish.

    Step 3: Add heat

If you're using a tealight burner, place an unscented 4-hour tealight underneath and light it. Always use unscented tealights so nothing competes with your wax melt fragrance.

If you're using an electric warmer, switch it on - and make sure it's 40 watts or above for proper scent release.

    Step 4: Enjoy

Within a few minutes, the wax will start to melt and fragrance will begin filling the room. That's it. You're done.

How Long Does a Wax Melt Last?

This depends on the wax melt itself and how it's used, but our snap bars are designed to give around 60+ hours of fragrance per bar when used in sections.

    Here's a rough guide:

    • One section of a snap bar - around 8 to 12 hours of fragrance
    • One 25g pod from our Discovery Box - around 20 to 24 hours
    • A full snap bar used all at once - you'll get stronger scent but fewer hours overall

The wax itself doesn't evaporate - it's the fragrance oil inside that releases as it heats. Once the scent has gone, the wax will look and feel the same but won't smell of anything. That's your cue to change it.

How to Change Your Wax Melt

When your wax has lost its scent and you want to switch to something new, here's the easiest way to do it.

The cotton pad method (our favourite) - while the wax is still liquid and warm, place a cotton pad or piece of kitchen roll into the dish. It absorbs the wax in seconds. Lift it out, wipe the dish, and you're ready for a new scent.

The freezer method - let the wax cool completely until solid, then pop the whole dish in the freezer for 10 minutes. The wax will contract slightly and lift out cleanly in one piece.

Never pour liquid wax down the sink - it will set and block your drain.

How Much Wax Melt Should I Use?

Start with less than you think you need.

One section of a snap bar is the right amount for most rooms. If you've used it and the scent feels too subtle after 20 minutes, add another piece next time. If it's overwhelming, use less.

There's no wrong answer - it's completely personal. Some people love a room that greets them the moment they walk in the door. Others prefer something softer in the background. Both are right.

Can You Mix Wax Melt Scents?

Yes - and it can be brilliant when it works.

The key is to choose scents from a similar family. Fresh + floral works well. Bakery + vanilla works well. Mixing a heavy musky scent with a bright citrus usually doesn't.

Start with two scents you already love individually and try a small piece of each together. The worst that can happen is you swap one out.

Tips for Getting the Most From Your Wax Melts

    • Use a tealight burner for best results - the heat from a tealight is optimal for scent release. If using electric, make sure it's at least 40 watts.
    • Use 4-hour unscented tealights - they burn at the right temperature. Avoid scented tealights as they'll compete with your wax melt fragrance.
    • Don't leave your burner unattended - treat a tealight burner with the same care you'd give a candle.
    • Keep the room slightly closed - a draught will carry scent away before it builds. Closing a door or window helps the fragrance fill the space.
    • Store your wax melts away from direct sunlight - heat and light can affect the fragrance before you've even used them. A drawer or cupboard is ideal.
    • Let the wax cool before handling - liquid wax is hot. Always let it cool fully before removing it from the dish.
